Bamboo has an innate resistance to insects and microbes so it is easily grown organically, that is without the use of synthetic chemicals. There is none of the chemical residue on bamboo fabric that is so irritating to chemically sensitive people. The anti-microbial qualities that protect bamboo plants from insects and diseases in the field remain in bamboo fabrics after 50 washings, according to tests at the Japan Textile Inspection Association, JTIA. JTIA's testing used 100% bamboo fabric that was industrially washed 50 times. Incubation over a 24-hour period with bacteria was followed by a count of live bacteria. Results showed that bamboo fabric exhibits greater than 70% anti-bacterial efficacy with no added chemicals.

Bamboo fibers make strong yet soft fabrics with natural elasticity. Bamboo fabrics readily absorb dye and require less of it. We don't dye our bamboo fabric, and the fabric is developed without the use of harsh chemicals, using methods that save more water than conventional methods.

Bamboo is:

• Naturally soft. Bamboo fabric is softer than the softest cotton, and it has a natural sheen like silk or cashmere. Bamboo drapes like silk or satin, yet is more durable.
• Allergy reduced. Bamboo's organic and naturally smooth fiber properties are non-irritating to the skin, making it ideal for people with skin sensitivities or other allergies and dermatitis.
• Absorbs moisture. A cross-section of bamboo fiber reveals various micro-holes, allowing bamboo cloth to have superior absorption. This allows bamboo cloth to absorb and evaporate human sweat rapidly. Bamboo fiber is four times more absorbent than cotton.
• Breathable. The porous qualities of bamboo fiber account for it's breathability; fabric made of bamboo resists clinging during hot weather or exercise.
• Anti-bacterial. Bamboo fabric contains a naturally occurring anti-microbial agent, kun, that prevents bacteria from cultivating on it, which means it helps keep you odor free.

A 100% bamboo product would be too soft for general use. Bamboo is often blended with 30% cotton to add structure to garments. Bamboo/cotton blends are also extremely soft but more substantial in weight, to help the functionality of the Zhu Hybrid Pouch. Blending with organic cotton gives the towel a stronger structure and a higher resilience to the types of environments where this product will be used. All the same properties of the bamboo, including anti-biological functions, are maintained due to the high percentage of the bamboo blend.
